The De La Salle Brothers
|
St. John
the Baptist De La Salle, the founder of the De La Salle Brothers,
was born in 1651 into a wealthy French family. However, in 1680
St. John gave up his wealth and dedicated his life to the education
of poor, and so began the work of the La Sallian movement.
Today
more than 7000 brothers continue the work of their founder in
more than 79 countries throughout the world, including Africa,
Asia, Europe, North America and south America. Those brothers,
working alongside some 60,000 lay colleagues are responsible
for the education of more than 775,000 students.
The
mission statement of the La Sallian order states that their
aim is "to give a human and Christian education
to the young especially the poor" . The order also
upholds a recent statement by the United Nations that "Humanity,
owes to the child the best is has to give.
In
India there are more than 40 Brothers who are responsible for
a number of both schools and residential facilities for their
students. |
